Model project of old Croydon Workhouse
South London, completed in 1866

In the late 1980’s I constructed this model as part of a local education study project. The model is particularly interesting because I designed it on an early Apple Mac computer using only PAGEMAKER v1 software.

You can see two sample construction panels below. Each building section was laser printed off onto coloured paper, then pasted onto mounting board and cut out for assembly. The model is approx 2.5ft wide by 6ft long and took two weeks to make.

The layout was researched by me using old maps and the text of the history of the workhouse. Due to there being no surviving

building plans some of the model construction ‘interior’ was guesswork, though there were enough old photos to reproduce the essential outside appearance and scale of the workhouse.
